September 2022 has marked a major milestone for the Imperial Valley College campus on Aten Road.
It could be called a Diamond Jubilee year for IVC. September 2022 marks 60 years since students first filled classrooms on the campus.
The opening of the IVC campus, in September of 1962, was the culmination of years of hard work by visionary citizens to finance and build a freestanding community college in Imperial County.
It had all began three years before, on October 6, 1959, when the Imperial Community College District (then called the Imperial Valley Junior College District) was formed by an overwhelming vote of local residents. This was followed by the election of the first Board of Trustees, one from each of the seven high school or unified school districts served by the Imperial Junior College District.
Approval for construction of a campus followed in 1960 when district residents set an all-time state record, voting by a ratio of thirteen to one in favor of bonds to finance the new IVC campus on Aten Road.
Our main campus opened in 1962, but classes started long before that, in the fall of 1924. Since then, we have grown into a reputable local college with more than 70 accredited programs, online classes, community programs, a robust athletics department, and more. Read our full history.
