At Imperial Valley College (IVC), we are deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all our students, including those who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+. This past academic year has been a testament to our dedication, marked by significant events and initiatives that celebrate diversity and promote inclusivity.
In June, IVC hosted a vibrant and informative Pride Month event in collaboration with the Pride Center from San Diego State University. The highlight of this celebration was the Safe Zone Training, held on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, in room 2734. This event provided students and staff with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of how to support the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Participants enjoyed various activities, including bracelet making, while engaging in meaningful conversations about inclusivity. They also received certificates for completing the training, along with IVC Pride promotional material and swag items such as Pride-related fans and flags. The event was complete with free food, refreshments, dessert, and a lively performance by an Elvis impersonator, creating a festive and educational atmosphere.
On Saturday, April 27, 2024, Imperial Valley College proudly participated in the annual Lavender Graduation ceremony, which took place at the San Diego State University-Imperial Valley campus. This ceremony, held in collaboration with SDSU, honored 112SLGBTQIA+ students who walked across the stage to receive pride flag-colored sashes, recognizing their academic achievements and personal journeys.
The Lavender Graduation alternates annually between the Calexico campus and IVC, highlighting the importance of providing respectful and safe spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ students to celebrate their successes. The struggles and discrimination that 2SLGBTQIA+ people often face make such ceremonies vital in recognizing their perseverance and resilience.
Alexis Villa, Vice President of Student Services and Equity at IVC, spoke passionately about the significance of the graduates' accomplishments. “Something I want to acknowledge is the graduates’ resilience,” Villa said. “You have carved out your own paths, proud and unapologetic in your own ways. You refuse to be defined by other people’s expectations but instead stand proud in your own way. Let us remember the importance of authenticity, as each of us has a unique story to tell, and we need to spend time willing to listen. And to the familia and allies in the room, let’s continue to fight the good fight and be that voice and be that ally.”
One of the proud students who participated was Javier Melara, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in Spanish and plans to pursue a master’s degree. Melara emphasized the need for more resources for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and shared his experiences working with the 2SLGBTQIA+ group at IVC. He noted the importance of providing safe spaces for students and the impact of allyship in reducing stigma.
Rosa Diaz, CEO of the Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center, played a significant role in the ceremony, placing honorary sashes on each graduate. The center's ongoing support and involvement underscore the collaborative efforts to build communities of love and acceptance within the Imperial Valley.
As we celebrate the achievements of the past year, we remain committed to creating a campus environment where every student feels valued, respected, and empowered. The support and resources provided by IVC, along with our community partners, play a crucial role in promoting the success and well-being of our 2SLGBTQIA+ students.
