Here's how IVC champions LGBTQIA+ student success:
At Imperial Valley College, we believe in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment where all students can thrive, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. We are dedicated to providing LGBTQIA+ students with the resources and support they need to achieve their academic goals and feel empowered to be themselves throughout their educational journey.
In line with the California Education Code (Section 66271.2), IVC has appointed an LGBTQIA+ Designee to serve as a point of contact for the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other non-heteronormative individuals on our campus. This position is crucial for fostering a supportive and responsive environment for all members of our community.
Incident Reporting and Support: Collect and verify reports of bullying, harassment, or intimidation based on real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.
Training and Development: Collaborate with departments, including Human Resources and the President/Superintendent's office, to provide training that reduces incidents and enhances understanding of LGBTQIA+ needs and concerns.
Community Engagement: Serve as the primary contact for external community interactions and media, offering programs that highlight IVC’s supportive environment and the role of the Designee.
Accessibility: Maintain contact information on the IVC website and student portal, ensuring multiple avenues for reporting incidents and accessing support.
Student Support Services: IVC’s Student Support department is dedicated to advocating for LGBTQIA+ students alongside other marginalized groups, ensuring comprehensive support for all students facing challenges such as homelessness, disabilities, and food insecurity.
IVC Cares: This program offers advocacy and support for LGBTQIA+ students, connecting them with essential resources and creating a supportive campus community.
Community Resources: In addition to on-campus support, IVC connects students with the Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center, which provides support groups, counseling, and additional opportunities for LGBTQIA+ individuals. Students can contact the center at 760-592-4066.
IVC benefits from the State Legislature’s investment in evidence-based practices designed to support LGBTQIA+ students, including:
